Flower arrangements in a house make it more serene and welcoming, they lift the overall mood and enhance creativity. Not to mention, playing with flowers is fun.
Flower arrangements hold up better in time, if they are supported by some sort of a structure. Floral Foam is very popular, but wherever I can, I try to use environmentally friendly practices, which is why I decided to make my own kenzan from mesh wire.
If you would like to make your own arrangement, get inspired by this spring tablescape.
I always like to begin with the greenery to give my floral arrangement structure and shape. Here is used prunus lauroerasus, laburnum anagyroides and mahonia.
Then I started layering my flowers. I like to begin with a base layer of fillers then group the next layer of flowers in uneven pairs.
Focal flowers go in last, so that they can be strategically placed, this way I do not run the risk of covering them by mistake, while adding the layers.
This arrangement contains narcissus. Narcissus are notoriously sappy. The sap leaking from narcissus stems unfortunately is poisonous for other plants sharing the same vase. This is why it is recommended to cut narcissus stems to the desired length, then leave them in a separate vase for a few hours before using them in a mixed arrangement. After 3-4 hours the stems will stop leaking. If they are not recut, they can be placed in mixed arrangements or bouquets without running the danger of them shortening the accompanying flowers’ lives.
Narcissus are a ray of sunshine on a gloomy spring day and their scent is absolutely mesmerizing. Change their water daily and they will last up to 8 days in the vase!
